This is Walter Brunson, my dad’s dad. Everyone called him Pop. I drew him from a little 2 x 3 inch photograph my grandma Millie had taken of him shortly before he passed away at age 69. She lived on until 94 with this drawing on her living room wall, where she could see it from the kitchen.
In the photo, which has been lost over time, the right side of Pop’s face was completely washed out by bright sunlight shining through the window by the chair he always sat in at the kitchen table. I created the detail you see now using clues from the shadow side.
